Teamsters Ratify New Five-Year Contract

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has ratified a new five-year labor contract with YRCW carriers including Yellow Transportation, Roadway and Reimer Express.

“The contract gives us the tools to serve our customers in what is an increasingly dynamic industry environment. The contract includes flexibilities that will allow the company to provide enhanced customer services,” stated YRC North American Transportation President Mike Smid.

“Most important,” Smid added, “the ratified contract was a win-win for the company and employees. Our drivers, dockworkers and other union members are the best in the freight shipping business.

“This contract is our blueprint for superior customer service and company performance over the next five years.”

Ron’s Winter Driving Tips

Ron’s Tips for Winter Driving

Ron VanBibber, a freight shipping account specialist from the Roadway service center in Salt Lake City, UT, has some safety tips to share for winter driving.

The March safe winter driving tip–Use extra caution when approaching bridges.

“Elevated structures like bridges and highway overpasses usually freeze first and many are not treated with ice/snow melt materials (salt, sand) like the rest of the road. I’ve seen many vehicles traveling fine on the highway, but as soon as they get on a bridge they spin out of control. Black ice is also often found on bridges.”

Does this sound like something you’ve experienced? Sales: “We just secured this hot order. It has to be there on Monday!” Production: “Our line is a bit behind. Roadway Express freight packaging requirements

September 27, 2007

Unlike small parcel shipping via USPS, Fed EX, UPS and DHL, shipping freight yields a much higher likelihood of damage. The common misconception is that packaging is not required, or minimally required. With Roadway Express, ask customer service about the packaging requirements for the type of freight you’re shipping. The terminal that picks up the item may refuse to pickup if the packaging is not up to standard. They do this to avoid freight claims and the potential of damaging your item. Trucking companies don’t want items to get damaged, so packaging guidelines are in place to prevent damage whenever possible.

The #1 reason for denial of freight damage claims is IMPROPER PACKAGING.

At a minimum your item should be secured to a wooden pallet. The pallet should be a minimum of 4” larger than the item secured to it on all sides. Yellow Freight loads and unloads their trailers with forklifts and pallet jacks. Sometimes a dock worker will try to slide the lift truck forks under and item not mounted on a pallet which causes damage in most cases. Should this cause damage, the carrier will yell “improper packaging” and accept no responsibility for the damage. When freight is loaded into a truck it will shift and move around slightly while going down the road. By using a pallet should your item shift the pallet will in most cases prevent or reduce damage.
